Wekiwa is a 72-degree spring that runs cold and clear all year, which is exactly why it’s a lifesaver in a Central Florida summer. People come to swim in the spring head, rent canoes and kayaks to paddle the Wekiva River, and hike the sandy trails that wind through pine flatwoods and hammock. I’ve seen deer, gopher tortoises, and plenty of turtles on the run, and folks regularly spot otters. It’s genuinely wild for being a 30-minute drive from downtown Orlando. If you want more spring water, Kelly Park / Rock Springs is just up the road for tubing the lazy run, and Blue Spring State Park near Orange City is the place to watch manatees on cold winter mornings.

When to book and what the weather’s like

  • Winter (Dec–Feb): Cool, dry, and the most popular camping stretch. Daytime is comfortable, nights can dip into the 40s, and the campground books out early — reserve your site as far ahead as the state park system allows.
  • Spring (Mar–May): My busiest delivery season. Warm days, the spring water feels amazing, and the bugs aren’t bad yet. Weekends go fast.
